Tethering with Windows Mobile in the test

Wi-Fi hotspot at HTC Titan under the microscope

The Windows Phone operating system from Microsoft got the Mango update with the "Internet Sharing" is a new feature that other Smartphone platforms has long been a matter of course: The phone can also be used as a wireless hotspot to the GPRS or UMTS-based Internet access to other smart phones or even pass on to tablets or laptops.

New Windows phones, which are delivered directly to the Mango software, have the mobile hotspot function normally even when delivered on board. An exception is the Nokia Lumia 800, where the tethering should be submitted as part of a firmware update. Windows phones are the first generation, at least in part, also received an update to allow tethering. It is not yet known which mobile phone models are equipped with the feature point.

We have subjected the "Internet Sharing" feature called the HTC Titan one test after the other features we have already tested the smartphone. This led us to the establishment and activation and to use the function in practice.

Tethering is not possible via USB cable and Bluetooth

Is it for other smartphone platforms like the Apple iPhone or Android smartphones usual, that it is possible to share Internet access with other devices via Wi-Fi and USB cable, it is provided only for Windows Mobile Hotspot feature. Via USB cable or via Bluetooth, the mobile Internet access can not be divided.

The configuration of the Mobile Hotspots is only after activation of the "Internet Sharing" is possible. In the menu item "Setting" can be under the term "transmission name" specify the SSID. A default value is already given. In addition, the user can choose between an unencrypted access point and the WPA2 encoding.

Who selects the encrypted access must also specify a password that is at least eight characters. This is displayed in plain text. So who's sitting next to the configuration in addition to the Windows Phone owners can apply the term so maybe read along and logs in to the hotspot, although this is not desirable. This is the owner of the smartphone will however, because it is always displayed, as many as "guests" designated terminals are connected to the hotspot.

Up to five devices can be supplied in parallel

Up to five devices can provide access to the Internet. In our test of the hotspot worked very stable for several hours. When you first connect a device, however, it takes relatively long to an IP address is assigned. In the menu of the Windows Phone will be displayed, the hotspot will be disabled if he is not used for several minutes. This is especially well with battery operation makes sense, especially since the relatively Mobile Hotspot takes a lot of battery capacity.

The "Internet Sharing" is a useful feature in Windows Phone. The Wi-Fi hotspot in our test run on the HTC Titan is very stable. Desirable for the future would be the ability to access the Internet in the future to pass on via USB cable to a laptop or netbook.
